How do koalas communicate? One way is through scent. Male koalas rub their chests against trees in their home range, leaving a smelly secretion behind. Other males smell it and keep away, and females smell it and think "Divine! I'll return in breeding season."

On our Wildlife Conservation Journey we often see a wild Echidna. But to see three within 10 minutes is incredible!! The first was by the beach - as we were all looking out to sea, one guest said "What's that?" and there she was, a little echidna foraging in the grass. We stayed so still and quiet that she walked right over to us, and brushed by one guest's foot!

But that was just the beginning. We walked around the corner, and there was another echidna! Happily foraging in the grass of a sports ground. This one was bigger than the first. He too ended up walking towards the same guest, and almost walked on his feet. By this time we were calling this man "The Echidna Whisperer".

By this time we were feeling pretty satisfied. So I thought I was dreaming when I looked over towards the bushland and saw the third Echidna! This one was huge!

It was hard to leave. Eventually, it started to drizzle with rain, so we dragged ourselves away, past a few more koalas, Rainbow Lorikeets and Eastern Rosellas. But it wasn't the end of the experience...as we were driving out towards Lake Tyers Beach we saw 2 more!! A 5 Echidna Day!!

Koalas can climb up a tree by bounding – with the two arms reaching forward as one, and two legs pushing off.

They can move very quickly while bounding. Koalas usually bound when they are close to the ground – probably to get up the tree to safety as fast as possible.

wild koala Pat's third son, Banjo, leaves his mother's arms for a while to try eating gum leaves on his own. He sways around dangerously amongst the smaller branches, but looks totally confident. He should enjoy his small size while he can - when he grows big he might not be able to reach the tender leaves on the tiniest branches! spotlighting at night is fun! This is a Common Brushtail we encountered at Gipsy Point, far East Gippsland. They forage after dark on tree trunks and on the ground.

wild koala Elizabeth has a brand new joey in the You Yangs, near Melbourne. This special baby needs an equally special name! So Tourism Victoria in the UK, Germany and Italy have a competition to name this little wild one. Winners will be announced soon on Facebook: Visit Melbourne & Victoria!

This lovely little bush bird is a surprise to find in an inner suburb of Melbourne! I came across her on my regular daily walk. I could hear scratching in the undergrowth. She foraged by going round and round in circles, kicking up the leaf litter and grabbing any food item (invertebrate?) she unearths. At one point she dug a deeper hole and sat in it and called. It is difficult to hear the call on the video - it is very low and deep. Towards the end you can just hear it if your speakers are up loud.

Water Pythons are non-venomous and live near swamps and wetlands in Australia's north, but they are sometimes seen in the open in the dry season, but usually at night.

On our last Wild Top End 6 day wildlife safari this python was seen while we were driving across the Mary River Floodplain. We stopped and got out to take photos, and to our surprise she approached us. There was no hint of aggression in her manner, so we stayed still and calm.

To our delight she touched the feet of three of our party - two Wildlife Guides and then one traveller (a reptile enthusiast) who was thrilled! Later we established that she was probably searching for a tree to climb, saw us as a vertical object and when she felt our warmth, she realised we were not a tree and moved on.

a wild echidna is being watched by our group on the 3 day Great Ocean Road tour. Paul, Wildlife Guide, has instructed the guests not to move so as not to disturb the echidna. Most surprisingly, the echidna walks right to them, passes between a guest's feet, then sniffs another guest before continuing on. Note: this was not staged in any way - all participants were totally surprised by what happened. We do not allow guests to touch or approach wild echidnas. This kind of thing happens very rarely, but we have seen in once before.

Three echidnas! It is breeding season and the large female at the front of this group is being gently but persistently pursued by two males. They stayed together pretty much the whole time I watched (over 40 minutes). One small male went off for a short time to forage, but returned to the other two. They appeared quite friendly with each other - snuggling together each time they stopped. Fabulous!

7 July 2010. The farmland at Wangarabell was just full of wallabies! Winter is such a good time to see mammals in southern Australia. The weather is chilly, but often sunny, and it's worth it to see an abundance of marsupials!
