Water Pythons are non-venomous and live near swamps and wetlands in Australia's north, but they are sometimes seen in the open in the dry season, but usually at night.
On our last Wild Top End 6 day wildlife safari this python was seen while we were driving across the Mary River Floodplain. We stopped and got out to take photos, and to our surprise she approached us. There was no hint of aggression in her manner, so we stayed still and calm.
To our delight she touched the feet of three of our party - two Wildlife Guides and then one traveller (a reptile enthusiast) who was thrilled! Later we established that she was probably searching for a tree to climb, saw us as a vertical object and when she felt our warmth, she realised we were not a tree and moved on.
